Artist Statement:
I am a woman of Mexican and Celtic
heritage born to a military family
here in the US. Military families
move often and we lived in states
including Virginia, New Mexico,
Colorado, California, Florida,
Illinois and even a time overseas in
Norway. My parents eventually
retired in Colorado where I have
remained.
Our moves brought
us the experience of different
cultures, even here in the US. It
was always interesting to move to
see what the new places would bring
us in nature, museums, cities, and
people and their way of life. We
camped, sailed, canoed, skied, and
hiked every place we lived- all of
us loving nature in our own ways.
All in my family
are makers of things. We drew,
knitted, woodworked, constructed
things, mostly for ourselves. My
making of things evolved beyond
personal craft into the level of
fine art- specifically drawing,
painting, and printmaking. My high
school teachers and college
professors greatly encouraged my
interests and honed my skills in
techniques as well as concept.
I chose graduate
studies here in Colorado because of
my love for the plains, its
continuing source of visual
inspiration in its broad vistas,
unending skies, interesting
horizons, exuberant color, and
myriad textures. It is a gift to
myself to immerse in this place and
make art about it.
During my art
career I have also become a mother,
a small business owner, an art
teacher, and a minister. I meditate
and journey in my quest for personal
insight, awareness, and earth
consciousness, and I assist others
in doing so.
Currently I reside
in Denver with my dog and we
meditate, visit with friends, and
especially visit with nature.
